Termite Swarming in Arizona: What It Means and When to Worry
Every spring, homeowners all across the Valley, including areas like Glendale, Phoenix, Goodyear, Surprise, and Chandler, start noticing tiny flying bugs near windows or doors, and they start wondering if it’s termites.
If you’ve seen this, don’t panic. It might not mean you need treatment right away. But it is a smart time to schedule an inspection.
What Are Swarmers?
Swarmers, often called flying termites, are the winged, reproductive members of a colony. Their job is to fly off, pair up, and try to start a new colony. They’re not dangerous themselves, and over 99% of them die within a few hours due to predators, dehydration, or exposure.
But their presence tells us that a mature termite colony is nearby, and sometimes it’s in the walls or under the foundation.
When You Should Be Concerned
Not all flying termite sightings are created equal.
If you just saw a few near a window or light fixture, especially after a door was open, they may have been blown in or just wandered inside.
But if you’re seeing dozens, or they’re crawling out from baseboards, tile cracks, or wall gaps, that could mean there’s a colony nearby and it may be time to treat.
Flying Termites or Ants?
Flying termites can be easily confused with flying ants. Here’s how to tell the difference:
Termites have straight antennae, equal-length wings, and a thick waist.
Ants have bent antennae, uneven wings, and a pinched waist.

What We’re Seeing Right Now
So far this season, we’ve inspected homes across Glendale, Phoenix, Chandler, Goodyear, and Surprise with active termite tubes, workers, and soldiers. Some were in garages, others in walls, and several had no visible signs until swarmers showed up.
We’ve included a few real photos from recent jobs below.
What to Do If You See Flying Termites
Don’t spray them with store-bought products, it won’t solve the root issue.
Try to take a photo and note where they’re coming from.
